D-Fenders Set NBA D-League Record with 26 Three-Pointers

By Kyle Dumo | February 6, 2014

Guard C.J. Williams drained a triple from the wing that gave the D-Fenders the new NBA D-League for three-pointers made in a game with 25.

About a minute-and-a-half later, he drilled another for good measure as L.A. finished with 26 three-pointers made towards a new season-high 155 points on Wednesday vs. Bakersfield.

“Sometimes it’s as simple as making shots,” coach Bob MacKinnon said. “Tonight we were making them.”

The D-Fenders shot a season-high 57.8 percent from the floor as seven players finished in double figures. Four of five starters had at least 20 points, including Terrence Williams (27), C.J. Williams (26), Shawne Williams (23) and Brandon Costner (20).

Below is a shot chart of their efficiency from the floor:

– Restricted area: 23 of 34 (67.6 percent)
– In the Paint (non-restricted area): 4 of 7 (57.1 percent)
– Mid-Range: 6 of 11 (54.5 percent)
– Left corner three-pointer: 3 of 4 (75.0 percent)
– Right corner three-pointer: 6 of 9 (66.7 percent)
– Above the break three-pointer: 17 of 37 (45.9 percent)

Overall: 59 of 102 field goals (57.8 percent)
Three-pointers: 26 of 50 (52.0 percent)

“On the offensive end, there’s not too much to like,” Josh Magette said. “You score 155 points, that’s the way we play. When that ball moves, we’re really good, and it moved tonight.”

Magette recorded his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 assists (to just two turnovers), while Josiah Turner also chipped in with 10 dimes off the bench. In total, L.A. registered 45 assists, another NBA D-League high for a game.

This performance comes less than two weeks after the D-Fenders scored 150 points vs. the Texas Legends. Over the last six games, the D-Fenders are 5-1 and are averaging 133.8 points on 49.4 percent field goals and 41.3 percent on three-pointers.

The win over Bakersfield on Wednesday put L.A. in a tie with Santa Cruz (16-11) and Reno (16-11) in the West Division. The D-Fenders head to Santa Cruz for a 7:30 p.m. PT tip-off on Saturday. It will be the fifth meeting of the year between the teams (122-112 L, 124-118 W, 108-105 L, 115-114 L).
